Good to Dream

This article is taken from the speech that our president Dr. APJ delivered. Our President has seen the power of dream and in this article he shares his opinion. This amazing article has been contributed by Shiva Naik G.

“It is good to have great dreams in life, dream transform into thoughts, thoughts results into action”

Youth of today must have ignited mind to lead a peaceful, happy and prosperous life. They must have unique traits- Values, a mission, converting challenges into opportunities and magnanimity to make a difference to our mother earth.

Let us take the example of Prof. Paul Crutzen who won Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1995 for demonstrating that Nitrogen Oxide accelerate the destruction of stratospheric Ozone, which protects the earth from the sun’s ultra-violet radiation. From the young age, Paul Curtzen was challenged by war, family conditions and different types of work environment.

In his younger days itself, Paul was fond of Physics (one must develop likings) and mathematics and also he was a good chess player. For many years Paul longed for an academic career and accidentally joined Meteorology department of Stockholm University as Programmer. There he programmed a model of tropical cyclone. Also, attended some of the lectures courses and fulfilled the requirement of MSc degree (constantly acquiring new knowledge). Time constraints did not permit him to pursue Physics or chemistry which needed large amount laboratory work. But he took up PhD thesis on a meteorological topic using his experience in the development of numerical model of a tropical cyclone. Simultaneously, he was given a task of helping a scientist from US to develop a numerical model of the oxygen allotrope distribution in the stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere. He got interested in this project leading to the study of photochemistry of atmospheric ocean and started an intensive study of the scientific literature which provided him the initial conditions for his scientific career. With this experience, he also changed the research topic to stratospheric chemistry. It is extraordinary that even though his earlier circumstances did not permit him to take up the pure science studies, his inherent passion enabled him to achieve at the highest level on the pure science related to atmospheric science. Here is a scientist who converted all the challenges which posed to his into opportunities in pursuit of his life time mission. He is indeed an example of how a strong mind can defeat the problem and succeed.

Any great task, any pioneering work or fulfilling any ambitious missions accompanies challenging the problems and succeeding. The challenges do consume concentrated mind and concerted efforts. Besides everything, to succeed in life, you need to have courage to realize it. The courage to think differently, the courage to invent, the courage to discover the impossible the courage to travel into an unexplored path, the courage to remove comfort and invite pain, the courage to work hard, the courage to reach the un-reached, the courage to face the problems and the courage to face defeat too to succeed.
